He fumbled for his sonic for a second before pulling it out and pointing it at the lock.</em></p> <p><em>“Does Father Christmas condone breaking and entering?” she asked, slightly out of breath from the climb and the heavy bike.</em></p> <p><em>“Sonicking and entering, how many times do I have to - ah!” He laughed in triumph and placed a finger over his lips as he opened the door, allowing Amy to go in ahead of him.</em></p> <p><em>The flat was small and dark, only the light shining from the crack under one of the doors. The Doctor saw it and chuckled to himself, something Amy didn’t really understand. “Of course,” he mumbled, shaking his head before turning back to his companion. “Well then, let’s get this under—”</em></p> <p><em>“Hello?”</em></p> <p><em>A small voice from behind them startled them both and they turned around. A girl of no more than twelve stood in front of the room with the light. She was standing close to the door frame, playing with her long dirty blond hair. The Doctor’s eyebrows were disappearing into his hair, and for the first time, Amy heard him stammer: “Hi, uhm…hello there.”</em></p> <p><em>The girl took a step toward them. “Are you Father Christmas?” she asked timidly.</em></p> <p><em>Amy watched as the Doctor took a step forward and knelt in front of the girl. “Yes I am,” he replied, smiling so big it made Amy smile. “And what do you want this year?”</em></p> <p><em>She looked skeptical. “I don’t believe in Father Christmas,” she said defiantly.</em></p> <p><em>The Doctor laughed. “Of course you don’t,” he replied. “But you should. Because he’s brought you something wonderful this year.”</em></p> <p><em>He moved aside so the girl could see the bike. Her eyes lit up at the sight of it and she ran forward, but instead of going to the bike, she was hugging the Doctor. Somehow, Amy knew that this wasn’t just a bike to her, it was an escape. “Thank you,” the girl whispered.</em></p> <p><em>The Doctor seemed to be at a loss for words. He hugged her back and pressed a kiss to the top of her head. “You’re welcome,” he said softly. The girl pulled away and made a break for the bike, but the Doctor took her by the hand. “Now, you’ve got to promise me something.” She nodded her head, and he continued: “Just…be fantastic. Let that bike not only take you down the street, but to another world. Because one day, you might actually get there.”</em></p> <p><em>The girl seemed confused, but she smiled anyway. “Okay.”</em></p> <p><em>“And don’t tell your mum about this, eh?” he asked, grinning at her. </em><em>He kissed her on the forehead and stood up straight. “Now, off to bed with you, you can play with your present in the morning.”</em></p> <p><em>She looked longingly at the bike for a moment before going back into her room. Without another word, the Doctor and Amy left the flat.</em></p> <p><em>Later, when they were in the TARDIS, Amy finally asked the question that had been burning in her gut all night. “Okay,” she began, sitting down next to him in the kitchen. “Who was she?”</em></p> <p><em>The Doctor turned to her and, instead of dancing around the answer, simply answered, “That, Amelia Pond, was Rose Tyler. The stuff of legend.”</em></p> <p><em>Amy had never seen such love in his eyes.</em></p>
